Podiums at the biggest races
Hartmuth's first UTMB, in 2023, ended with a second place. She returned in 2025 and finished third in 24:16:39 behind Ruth Croft and Camille Bruyas in the wettest edition in the race's history. In between she was third at the Diagonale des Fous in 2024 and third at Hardrock in both 2024 and 2025, and won the Trail 100 Andorra by UTMB.
The Tor des Géants record, twice
Hartmuth won the 330km Tor des Géants in 2024 in 79:10:40, the first women's finish under 80 hours. She returned in 2026 and ran 67:10:09, taking more than twelve hours off her own record and finishing third across the entire field, the first woman on the race's overall podium in its history. Races of that length are decided by sleep strategy and the ability to keep eating for three days, and she is among the very best in the world at both.
Championship racing
She took silver in the women's Trail Long race at the 2023 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Innsbruck, running 11:29:14 over 86.9km and 6,500m of climbing.
How Katharina runs
Hartmuth is a pure long-course specialist who gets stronger as races get longer and harder. She is conservative in the first half of any 100-miler and at her most dangerous in the final night, when athletes who started faster are slowing and her pace barely changes.
Her real strength shows over multi-day distances. Races like the 330km Tor des Géants are decided by sleep strategy and the ability to keep eating for days, and she manages both exceptionally well. Her 2026 run of 67:10:09 took more than twelve hours off her own course record and put her third overall, the first woman on the race's overall podium.
She also handles bad conditions well. Her third place at the 2025 UTMB came in the wettest edition in the race's history, and her silver medal at the 2023 Trail World Championships came over 86.9km and 6,500m of climbing.
Where Katharina is strongest
Races beyond 100 miles, such as the Tor des Géants and the Diagonale des Fous, where she was third in 2024, and cold, wet Alpine 100-milers such as UTMB, where she has been second and third.
She is less likely to win shorter, faster races where speed decides the outcome. Her advantage grows with every hour of racing, which is why multi-day events are where she has made history.
The edge. Sleep and fuelling management over multi-day distances.
What you can learn from Katharina
1. Multi-day racing is a nutrition and sleep problem first
Over three days, the runner who keeps eating and manages sleep best usually wins. Practise eating regularly during long days, try different foods for when your appetite fades, and plan short sleep breaks in advance.
2. Be conservative early
Hartmuth's best races come from patient first halves. In very long races, the early hours should feel easy. You will need that energy on the second and third days, when the real race is decided.
3. Train in the conditions you will race in
Cold, wet weather favours athletes who have trained in it. If your goal race could be cold or wet, do some long runs in bad weather with your full kit, so you know how to stay warm, dry and fuelled.
4. A long-course base can deliver early success
She finished second at her first UTMB. If you have built a solid base of long mountain days, do not be afraid to aim high at your first big race, while respecting the distance and pacing patiently.
