The 2016 UTMB comeback
Pommeret spent the first 50km of the 2016 UTMB dealing with stomach problems and was in 48th place at Les Chapieux. He then moved through the entire field over the second half of the race to win, at 41, in what is still cited as the greatest comeback in the event's history.
Getting faster in his fifties
Most ultrarunners fade after 40. Pommeret has done the opposite: a Diagonale des Fous win in 2019, then three consecutive Hardrock 100 titles in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The last of them, weeks before his 51st birthday, was led from the opening miles and finished in 21:11:36, the fastest time ever recorded on the Hardrock course and nearly 22 minutes inside his own previous record.
Where he is right now
Still racing the whole calendar. In 2025 he was sixth at UTMB in 20:40:34 six weeks after winning Hardrock, and in 2026 he was third at the 270km Marathon des Sables Legendary.
How Ludovic runs
Pommeret's most famous win came from far behind: at the 2016 UTMB he was around 50th near halfway and moved through the entire field in the second half. But he is not only a patient starter. At the 2026 Hardrock 100 he led from the top of the first climb, seven miles in, was 23 minutes ahead of his own record pace by Ouray at mile 44, and finished 2 hours 37 minutes clear. What links the two races is how little his pace decays late on, whether he is chasing or leading.
He is an efficient, economical climber who hikes steep ground well and runs everything else at a pace he knows he can sustain. Nothing about his style is flashy. What stands out is how little his pace decays: his late-race splits on long mountain courses are often among the fastest in the field.
He also manages problems rather than avoiding them. The 2016 UTMB win came after hours of stomach trouble early in the race, and his ability to slow down, fix an issue and then race again is a big part of why he finishes, and wins, races that end other people's days.
Where Ludovic is strongest
Long, high-altitude mountain 100-milers. Hardrock, with an average elevation above 3,000m and some of the hardest climbs in the sport, suits him better than anyone currently racing, and his three straight wins there from 2024 to 2026, the last in a course record at 50, show how much the altitude and the length play to his strengths.
He has also won the Diagonale des Fous on Réunion and raced multi-day formats such as the 270km Marathon des Sables Legendary, which confirms a broad pattern: the longer, harder and more attritional the race, the better he does relative to the field.
The edge. Recovery and longevity. Racing Hardrock and UTMB within six weeks, twice, and setting a Hardrock course record at 50 are not normal.
What you can learn from Ludovic
1. Halfway position means very little
Pommeret won UTMB from around 50th place near halfway. In any ultra, ignore the race around you in the first half and run to your own effort plan. The people ahead of you early are often the people you will pass later, and the only position that matters is the one at the finish.
2. Plan for problems, not just for a perfect day
His best results often came on days that started badly. Before a long race, write down what you will do if your stomach turns, if you get cold, or if your legs go: slow down, switch to easier food, take a few minutes to reset. Having a plan for bad patches turns them into temporary setbacks rather than reasons to drop out.
3. Train your gut as seriously as your legs
Eating consistently for 20 hours or more is a trained skill. Practise race nutrition on every long run, at race effort, and gradually increase how much you take in per hour. Find a few foods you can still eat when you feel terrible, because late in a long race those are the ones that matter.
4. You can still improve as a masters runner
He set a Hardrock course record at 50. Endurance and the ability to sustain an effort for many hours hold up with age far better than top speed does. If you are over 40, put your focus on long, steady aerobic work, consistent strength training and smart recovery, and the longest distances may be where your best results are still to come.
