How the AI Plan Generator Builds Your Plan
Most free running plan generators give you a road plan with the distance changed. Trail races are decided on the climbs and descents, so this one starts from the course.
- Phases sized to your race date. Base, build, race-specific and taper blocks, with the base shortened first when the race is close.
- Volume from where you are now. Weekly distance, runs per week and your time limits set the starting load, so the first week looks like your current week.
- Climbing targets, not just kilometres. Weekly vertical gain rises towards what the course demands, with descent built up gradually to protect your quads.
- Effort-based sessions. Hill repeats, tempo climbs and long runs are prescribed by effort and heart rate, because pace means little on a 15% gradient.
The rules behind these choices are in our coaching methodology. For a fixed plan, see the free 8-week trail running training plan or the UTMB training plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this AI running plan generator really free?
Yes. Filling in the form and seeing the plan preview (phases, weekly structure and key workouts) is free, with no account and no card. A free Trailia account turns it into a full plan with every session in detail. Pro adds unlimited plan regeneration, training-load tracking and calendar export.
Do I need a GPX file?
No. A GPX file lets the tool use the exact elevation profile of your race. Without it, it uses the total distance and elevation gain you enter.
What distances does the generator support?
Any trail distance from 10K to 100K+ ultras. The number of weeks and the phases adapt to the race distance.
How many weeks do I need before my race?
As a rule of thumb: 8 weeks for a trail 10K to half marathon if you already run regularly, 12 to 16 weeks for a trail marathon, 16 to 20 weeks for a first 50K, and 24 weeks or more for 100K and 100-mile races. The generator works with whatever time you have and shortens the base phase first when the race is close.
Can I use it without a watch or Strava?
Yes. The plan is built from what you enter. Connecting Strava, Garmin or Polar later is optional; it lets the plan check your real training load.
Can I generate a plan for UTMB or other major ultras?
Yes. Upload the GPX file from the race website and the plan builds elevation-specific blocks, back-to-back long runs and a taper for ultra distances.
