From orienteering to the trails
Wyder arrived in trail running in 2019 with five orienteering world titles and six European titles already behind her, and won the Golden Trail World Series in her first full season with three wins and a second place from four races. Orienteering had already given her the terrain-reading and pace-judgement skills that the sport's specialists spend years developing.
Still at the front
In 2024 she won the Marathon du Mont-Blanc in a course record 4:11:12 and finished second overall in the Golden Trail World Series behind Joyce Njeru. In 2025 she was second at Zegama-Aizkorri in 4:29:47. In 2026 she won the senior women's trail race at the European Off-Road Running Championships over 52km.
Where she is right now
European trail champion and a regular podium threat on the Golden Trail circuit, competing into her late thirties.
How Judith runs
Wyder is the most technically fluent runner in the women's short-trail field, and the reason is orienteering. Five orienteering world titles taught her to read terrain at speed, choose lines instantly and keep running hard on rough ground where most runners slow down.
That shows most on descents and on mixed terrain. She is a fast, confident downhill runner and loses very little speed on the roughest sections of a course, which turns technical sections into places where she gains time rather than survives.
She is also a smart, experienced racer who paces well and knows how to win championships. She moved into trail running in 2019 with that racing experience already in place, and won the Golden Trail World Series in her first full season.
Where Judith is strongest
Technical 20 to 50km mountain courses with mixed terrain, such as the Marathon du Mont-Blanc, where she set a course record of 4:11:12 in 2024, and Zegama-Aizkorri, where she was second in 2025. She also excels in championship trail races, winning the 2026 European title over 52km.
She is less suited to very long ultras and to purely uphill formats, where climbing power alone decides. Her advantage is greatest where terrain variety and technical skill matter most.
The edge. Terrain reading. She loses less speed than her rivals on the roughest sections of a course.
What you can learn from Judith
1. Skills from other sports transfer
Orienteering gave Wyder her terrain reading and line choice. Activities like orienteering, scrambling, ski touring or even trail running on varied, unmarked terrain build movement skills that pure road or track running cannot.
2. Technical confidence is speed
Being comfortable on rough ground is not just about safety; it is free time in a race. Practise running on roots, rocks and loose ground regularly, start slowly and build up, and you will spend less energy and lose less time on technical sections.
3. Look ahead, not at your feet
Orienteers learn to read the terrain several metres ahead and plan their route. On technical trails, look a few steps ahead, choose your line early and trust your feet. It makes your movement smoother and faster.
4. It is never too late to switch disciplines
She came to trail running after a full orienteering career and won immediately. If you have a background in another endurance sport, your base and skills can carry over into trail running faster than you might expect.
