From the track to the trails

Florea started in track and road racing over distances from 1,500m to the marathon, and moved to trail running in 2019 after injury. In 2023 she won the Golden Trail World Series Grand Final at Noli with no sponsor and no contract, which is what turned her into a professional athlete.

The 2025 title

Signing with SCOTT Running at the start of 2025, she led the series from the front all season. A win at Il Golfo dell'Isola in Noli in 2:22:29 put her top of the standings, and a second place at the Ledro Sky Trentino final sealed the overall Golden Trail World Series title.

Where she is right now

She leads the 2026 series on 872 points, well clear of Caroline Kimutai on 614. Her August win at Sierre-Zinal in 2:55:44 was her first at the race, and at Mandarfen she pulled away on slopes above 30% to take another. She is the reference point in women's short-trail racing at the moment.

How Mădălina runs

Florea brings track speed to mountain racing. She raced on the track and roads from 1,500m to the marathon before moving to trail running in 2019 after injury, and her background shows in her efficient running on flatter and rolling sections and in her ability to hold a pace that others cannot match.

She has added mountain-specific strength to that speed. She is at her best on the steepest climbing sections, where she habitually breaks the race. At Mandarfen in 2026 she pulled away on slopes steeper than 30 percent, and her road speed then lets her hold any gap she creates.

She is also remarkably consistent. She won the 2025 Golden Trail World Series by racing well across a whole season, and her 2026 season, including a first Sierre-Zinal win in 2:55:44, has followed the same pattern.

Where Mădălina is strongest

Steep 20 to 35km Golden Trail courses with sustained climbing, such as Sierre-Zinal, Mandarfen and Noli, where she won the 2023 Grand Final without a sponsor or contract.

She races the short-trail format rather than ultras. Her combination of track speed and climbing makes her especially strong on courses that mix big climbs with fast running.

The edge. Season-long consistency: podiums across continents, not just peak-day performances.

What you can learn from Mădălina

1. Speed work helps on trails too

Florea's track background is a key part of her success. Even if you mainly run trails, a weekly session of faster running, such as intervals on a track, road or flat trail, raises the pace you can hold on the easier sections of a race.

2. Add climbing strength to your speed

Her climbing is where she breaks races. Combine speed work with steep uphill repeats and leg strength exercises, so your speed is useful on the hills as well as on the flat.

3. An injury can lead to a new direction

She moved to trail running after injury and found her best event. If an injury forces you away from your usual running, it can be a chance to try something new, such as trails, mountains or a different distance.

4. Consistency wins seasons

Series titles are won by racing well every time, not by one great day. Plan your racing season with enough recovery between events so you can perform consistently, rather than peaking for one race and struggling at the rest.
